LotR Book 4 Changes




 

The Book

The Movie

Chapter I: The Taming of Sméagol

Frodo tells Sam what hope they had was in speed. He laments that he did not break from the Fellowship sooner.

Celeborn tells Aragorn that what hope they had was in speed and that they’re being tracked by orcs before leaving Lothlorien.

Sam asks Frodo if he has seen the eyes recently.

Frodo tells Sam that they’re not alone.

Sam volunteers to climb down a cliff, but Frodo pulls him back up.

Not in the movie.

Frodo tries to climb down the cliff, but slips and he is blinded by some lightning. Sam pulls Frodo up with his elven rope.

Sam drops a box of salt and calls for Frodo to catch it. Frodo falls a few feet to the bottom safely.

Sam says the shrill cry heard during the thunder sounded like a Ringwraith, if they could fly.

Not in the movie. Frodo feels they Eye of Sauron, though.

Sam ties the rope to a stump; Frodo and Sam descend without problem.

Sam ties the rope to a rock. They have a problem with the salt falling.

Frodo and Sam spot Gollum and hide. Gollum falls off the cliff by accident. Sam attacks Gollum.

Frodo and Sam feign sleep and surprise Gollum by pulling him off of the cliff. They struggle, and Gollum is tied up.

Gollum complains of being attacked needlessly. He whimpers and tells the hobbits to not to go to Mordor.

After Gollum is untied by Frodo, he admits to knowing the way to Mordor. Frodo commands him to lead them to the Black Gate.

Frodo and Sam catch Gollum in an escape attempt while pretending to sleep. They tie him up with the elven rope around his ankle.

They pretend to sleep before they meet Gollum, and tie him up after their struggle around his neck.

Gollum calls himself Sméagol and swears to serve the master of the precious.

Gollum swears to serve the master of the precious as a plea bargain to take the rope off.

Sméagol swears on the precious. Frodo makes him swear by it, instead.

Gollum swears on the precious. Sam doesn’t believe him.

After promising, Frodo tells Sam to take the rope off of Gollum.

Frodo takes the rope off of Gollum while asking him about a former trip to Mordor.

Gollum gets a bit ahead of the hobbits. Sam calls him back.

While leading the hobbits, Gollum has a conversation with himself and appears to run away, only to return seconds later.

Chapter II: The Passage of the Marshes

Gollum sings a song to himself about fish. He retells a riddle he told to Bilbo years ago.

Gollum sung part of this while in the Forbidden Pool. He doesn’t mention the riddle.

Gollum goes off looking for food after the hobbits wake.

Gollum eats a worm while the hobbits eat Lembas.

After Sam notices lights all around them, Gollum warns them not to heed them.

Gollum warns them not to heed the lights after Sam sees dead faces in the water.

Sam trips on a root and sees dead faces in the water.

Sam sees dead faces in the water while walking.

Frodo stares at the dead until Sam urges him to continue.

Frodo stares at the dead and falls in the water. Gollum pulls him out.

They hear a Ringwraith after the clouds break; they hide.

Frodo sees Gollum playing with an imaginary ring and reminds Gollum of his name. They hear a Ringwraith after Frodo and Gollum have their conversation.

Gollum cowers and refuses to get up until long after the Ringwraith is gone.

Gollum tells them the wraiths cannot be killed. Soon after the Ringwraith is gone, Gollum gets up and leads them.

While resting outside of the marsh, Sam hears Gollum arguing with himself.

While resting in Ithilien, Gollum argues with himself unbeknownst to the hobbits. Sam hears Gollum’s argument later before they reach the Crossroads.

Gollum’s argument centers on the Ring, Frodo, Bilbo, and the Dark Lord. Sméagol wants to help Frodo; Gollum wants to replace the Dark Lord.

Gollum argues with himself with no audience. The argument centers on dealing with his split personality. Sméagol tells Gollum to leave and never come back. Sam does overhear another argument later, just before they reach Minas Morgul. Sam attacks Gollum.

Gollum suggests that Shelob could help them.

This happens after being released by Faramir while going to the crossroads.

They feel the fear as when the Ringwraith flew overhead again.

Chapter III: The Black Gate is Closed

At sunrise, a horn blows for the shift changes of the guards.

Frodo declares his intention to enter Mordor. Gollum pleads with him to not go in this way. He asks to take the ring far away. Gollum tells them of another way.

As the gate opens to let an army in, Frodo declares his intention to enter Mordor. Sam falls down a hill, and Frodo hides them both with his cloak. As the Gate closes, Gollum pleads with him to not go in this way, and tells him of another way.

They wait all day to hide and decide what to do. Frodo scolds Gollum. Gollum gives many details of the other way into Mordor.

They hear singing and shouting. An army approaches and enters the gate.

They hear a horn and the gate opens. The army enters, and almost sees Sam and Frodo.

Sam asks if they have Oliphaunts, and tells Gollum what they are.

Chapter IV: Of Herbs and Stewed Rabbit

While Frodo is sleeping, Sam asks Gollum to find some food fit for hobbits. He brings rabbits.

A seemingly reformed Gollum brings Frodo some rabbits without being asked. Sam is suspicious.

Sam asks Gollum to bring water to boil. Sam’s fire upsets Gollum for several reasons.

Gollum doesn’t understand why Sam wants to skin and boil the meat. He encourages Sam to eat them raw.

Gollum starts to eat the rabbits in front of Frodo and encourages him to eat them raw as well.

Sam asks Gollum to get some herbs, but Gollum refuses.

Sam adds herbs to the stew.

Gollum wants fish now.

Gollum wants fish raw and wriggling.

Sam wakes Frodo and they eat the stew.

They are distracted and don’t eat it.

As Sam washes his gear, he notices some smoke from his fire and hears someone mimicking a bird call and voices.

Frodo hears someone mimicking a bird call as Sam finishes cooking his stew.

Men appear out of the wood looking for the fire. They see the hobbits.

Men appear out of the wood after a small battle takes place.

Faramir says there are no travelers, only servants of the Dark Tower or the White Tower.

Faramir questions the hobbits about Gollum. Frodo calls him a chance companion.

Faramir questions the hobbits about Gollum while in their hidden fort. He denies having a third member.

Frodo tells Faramir of the Fellowship and of Boromir’s words.

Faramir leaves two men to guard the hobbits. They speak of their mission against the southerners.

Faramir tells his men to bind the hobbits’ hands immediately.

 

They hear a battle, and take a closer look.

They witness a battle after investigating a marching army.

Sam sees a dead southerner and wonders about him.

Faramir wonders this about a dead southerner comparing the hobbits’ duty to the dead man.

Chapter V: The Window on the West

Faramir interrogates Frodo about his account of their quest and about Islildur’s Bane and Boromir while in Ithilien.

Faramir interrogates Frodo in their fort about their quest and Boromir.

Sam interrupts to defend Frodo.

Faramir asks Frodo of Boromir’s horn. He tells of finding Boromir in the boat, and is curious of his belt.

Shown in a flashback while at Henneth Annûn, but no belt as he wasn’t given anything in Lothlorien.

While walking to the fort, Faramir reveals that he knows Frodo was not telling the whole truth. Faramir also tells more of his knowledge of history, and of Boromir and Gandalf.

Faramir says he would not take this thing, even if it lay by the highway, nor for using the weapon of the Enemy.

Faramir is clearly tempted by the power of the ring and motivated by proving his quality to his father.

The hobbits are blindfolded and carried for some of the journey to Henneth Annûn.

Shown during Galadriel’s narration to Elrond.

The hobbits are given a low bed to lie on.

The hobbits are kept in a dungeon like storage hole.

A soldier reports seeing Gollum.

They give the hobbits a meal. Sam washes his hands and head to keep awake.

After the meal, Faramir and Frodo talk about the quest and Boromir’s part. Frodo then asks Faramir of the surrounding cities.

Faramir says it is long since they had any hope.

Boromir said it is long since they had any hope while talking to Aragorn in Lothlorien.

Faramir tells about some of the history of Gondor and their alliance with Rohan; he also tells of his thoughts on elves. Sam tells Faramir of Galadriel.

Sam’s tongue slips while talking of Boromir; he mentions the Enemy’s Ring. He warns Faramir not to take advantage of Frodo.

Faramir finds out about the ring from Gollum. He reveals the ring from Frodo’s shirt with his sword tip.

Faramir does not take the ring, and reminds them of his vow earlier.

Faramir is tempted by the ring, and decides to take them to Minas Tirith.

Faramir tells Frodo they at last understand one another

Faramir tells Frodo this after the attack at Osgilliath.

Faramir asks Frodo of his path and intentions. Frodo tells him they wish to destroy the Ring.

Sam tells Faramir where they’re headed and their intentions after Faramir threatens to take the Ring.

Sam tells Faramir he’s shown his quality by not taking the Ring, and that Faramir has an air about him like wizards.

Sam tells Faramir this after the attack on Osgilliath; his quality is shown by letting them go.

Chapter VI: The Forbidden Pool

Faramir wakes Frodo and takes him outside. Sam wakes also and follows them.

Faramir wakes Frodo and takes him outside. Sam sleeps.

One of Faramir’s men reminds him that coming unbidden bears the penalty of death.

Faramir tells Frodo that entering the Forbidden Pool bears the penalty of death.

Gollum talks to himself.

Gollum sings to himself about fish.

Frodo beckons Gollum, telling him he is in danger and that the precious will be angry.

Frodo beckons Gollum without telling him the reason.

Faramir questions Gollum with Frodo present. Frodo cuts Gollum’s bonds. He is at the mercy of Frodo.

Faramir’s men beat Gollum until he cries. He whimpers to himself about the tricksy hobbits stealing something. Faramir interrogates him.

Faramir declares Frodo free to roam in the lands for one year.

Faramir frees Frodo after the attack on Osgilliath. Anborn reminds him of his father’s laws, and that his life is forfeit.

Faramir asks Gollum where he is leading the hobbits and about Cirth Ungol.

Faramir asks this after the attack on Osgilliath.

Chapter VII: Journey to the Cross-Roads

Faramir gives them some food and walking staves.

Not shown in the movie.

Faramir has Gollum blindfolded, but releases the hobbits of this burden. Frodo has all three blindfolded.

Gollum complains of a sore neck due to the men. Frodo commands him to be silent; Gollum claims to be joking.

Sam tells Gollum that Frodo’s intentions were to save him so there shouldn’t be any hard feelings. Gollum seemingly agrees.

They journey in silence and alone.

They are led by the Faramir’s men. Frodo pleads to be set free.

They stay east of Osgilliath, and follow the path to the crossroads and then towards Minas Morgul.

They are somehow taken from the east side of Osgilliath (the orc side) to the west side (Gondor’s side) for a battle. Faramir releases them and they travel back to the east side. Through some old sewers.

Gollum debates with himself after being set free. He decides to use Shelob to kill the hobbits.

Not in the book.

Gollum again goes over the plan to use Shelob to kill the hobbits. Sam overhears and strikes Gollum.

Not in the book.

Frodo has a feeling he won’t be coming back. Sam says they will go there and back again.

Frodo notices the sun shining on the fallen head of the king statue with his new crown of flowers.

Sam notices this in RotK .

Chapter VIII: The Stairs of Cirith Ungol

 

 

The tower of Minas Morgul makes Gollum and the hobbits cower briefly

Not shown in the movie.

Gollum leads the hobbits on a walking path near the city, heading toward the mountains.

The stairs start just beyond the bridge to Minas Morgul.

After walking on the path to the height of the city, they rest. Forks of blue flame shoot up from the city in answer to another signal from Mordor.

Just before starting the climb, a glowing, green swirling cloud shoots up from the city.

Frodo sees the leader of the Nine lead the armies out on horseback. He wears a crown over his black hood.

Frodo sees the leader of the Nine rise out of the city on a flying fell beast. He wears a pointed helmet with his hood back.

Frodo’s urge to put on the ring is quelled by Galadriel’s phial.

Not shown in the movie.

The hobbits wait until the army is nearly out of sight before moving on.

Armies continue to pour out of Minas Morgul as they climb higher on the stairs.

They reach the stairs and begin the vertical climb.

The vertical climb began just outside of Minas Morgul.

Gollum calls the hobbits clever for climbing so high after climbing the first stair.

Gollum says this to Sam and Frodo on Mt. Doom just before attacking them.

The hobbits rest in the tunnel.

The hobbits rest on a ledge above Minas Morgul.

They eat a meal of Lembas and the food given to them by Faramir.

Gollum uses the Lembas for his devious purposes to send Sam away. They have only Lembas left at this point.

Sam talks about the people in the stories of old, such as Beren, and how people will want to hear of the tale of Frodo. Frodo mentions Samwise the stouthearted.

Part of this takes place in Osgilliath just before Faramir releases them. The rest happens on the journey to the Cross-Roads. Frodo mentions Samwise the Brave.

Sam and Frodo discuss Gollum’s treachery and motives. Sam feels even more uneasy about Gollum

Sam warns Gollum not to try anything or he’ll have to answer to Sam.

Frodo falls asleep in Sam’s arms. Gollum almost repents.

Gollum appears to overcome his darker side and becomes genuinely good until Faramir’s men beat him.

Sam wakes and accuses Gollum of sneaking.

Just after Gollum tosses the Lembas and spreads crumbs on Sam’s cloak, Sam wakes and accuses Gollum of sneaking. A struggle ensues, sending Sam home.

Chapter IX: Shelob’s Lair

The tunnel is darker than Moria.

The tunnel isn’t very dark.

The hobbits journey through the long tunnel, finding several other passages. Their hands clasp as they endure it.

Not shown in the movie. In fact, Sam isn’t even present. Gollum leads Frodo into the trap by his voice alone.

After passing the source of the smell, they come to a fork. Gollum is gone. Sam curses him.

Gollum leaves Frodo by himself, but beckons him from an unknown location in the cave.

After hearing a hiss, Sam grabs his sword and wishes for Tom Bombadil.

Sam suddenly remembers Galadriel’s phial.

Frodo remembers Galadriel’s phial after stumbling through web and bones left by Shelob.

Frodo calls out Galadriel’s name.

Frodo has a vision of Galadriel after his struggle with Gollum.

Frodo confronts Shelob with the phial and Sting. Shelob backs off and disappears.

Frodo runs from Shelob, using the phial to keep her at a distance.

The hobbits run up the other tunnel until they are stopped by web. Shelob is not in sight.

Frodo flees from Shelob, who is close behind, until stopped by web.

Sam tries to hack at the web, but is unable to cut it. Frodo gives the phial to Sam and tries to cut the web with Sting.

Frodo hears Gollum taunting him. Frodo hacks at the web with Sting and escapes from Shelob in the nick of time.

While running up the tunnel, Shelob comes between the hobbits from an unseen passage.

Shelob is shown chasing Frodo through her cave.

Gollum attacks Sam from behind. Sam drives Gollum into the wall, then breaks his staff (which was given to him by Faramir) while using it as a weapon.

Gollum attacks Frodo, but Frodo gets the upper hand. Gollum begs for mercy, blaming the precious. Frodo lets him go, and tells Gollum of his intention to destroy the ring for their sakes.

Gollum runs down the tunnel. Sam chases him for a few footsteps.

Gollum tries a second attack, but falls down a ravine.

Chapter X: The Choices of Master Samwise

Sam returns to Frodo’s aid, only to find him limp and bound up in web. Sam deduces that Frodo has been poisoned.

Sam returns from finding signs of Gollum’s treachery with the Lembas only to find him limp and bound up in web. We are shown Frodo’s poisoning.

While still holding his own sword, Sam grabs Sting, charges at Shelob, attacks her foot, then goes underneath her and stabs out one of her eyes.

Sam, holding Sting and the phial, threatens Shelob. He swings at her legs several times with Sting. She knocks Sam down and knocks the phial and Sting away. Sam fights weaponless for a bit, but then recovers Sting and stabs out one of her eyes.

Shelob tries to crush Sam with her body, but Sam has Sting pointed up. She is pieced deeply and jumps away.

Shelob tries to stab Sam with her stinger, but only hits the ground. Sam holds Sting up and she impales herself.

Still reeling with the stench of Shelob, Sam pulls out the phial from his pocket before she can attack again. He uses the name of Elbereth and talks in Elvish. Sam takes one last hack at her leg.

Sam uses the phial and Sting to drive her back into a hole.

Sam stabs the air in anger. He remembers what he saw in Galadriel’s mirror of this. He falls unconscious.

Not shown in the movie since Sam wasn’t present at Galadriel’s Mirror.

Sam laments Frodo’s death and has a conversation in his own mind about what to do next. He struggles with the choice, but decides to take Sting, the phial, and the Ring; he leaves his sword by Frodo.

Sam laments Frodo’s death until he sees Sting glowing blue and hides.

 

The fact that Sam has the Ring is somewhat of a surprise later on to the audience.

Sam leaves Frodo and pushes on until he hears orcs ahead. He puts on the Ring and evades them while listening to them and following them back to Frodo.

While following them, still wearing the Ring, Sam overhears the Shagrat and Gorbag discussing current events.

Not shown in the movie.

The orcs go back into the caves and enter a secret passage. Sam can’t follow.

In the passage, Shagrat and Gorbag continue talking about current events and orders from Barad-dur. They mention Gollum and deduce there must be another spy, an elvish warrior.

Not shown in the movie.

Sam finds out Frodo is only poisoned.

While hiding behind some rocks, Sam overhears Shagrat telling the other orcs that Frodo is not dead.

Encouraged by the news, Sam uses Sting’s light to find a way over the passage door.

Not shown in the movie.

Sam runs after the orcs, still wearing the Ring. He is knocked unconscious by a metal door he runs into.
