The remaining three of the Fellowship put Boromir in a boat and watch him go down the falls of Rauros.

They discover Frodo and Sam’s packs to be missing, as well as one boat.

They see Frodo and Sam reach the eastern shore.

They deduce that the Uruk-hai belonged to Saruman, confirming Gandalf’s suspicions.

Gandalf discovers this information during his imprisonment and relays this to Elrond before the Council.

Chapter II: The Riders of Rohan

Aragorn and Legolas discuss the path the orcs will take and guess they will take the shortest route to Fangorn to avoid the Rohirrim.

After following them for a while, Legolas uses his elf eyes to discover the orcs turning northeast, towards Isengard.

While running, the Three Hunters discover some dead Moria Orcs, probably killed by the Uruk-hai in a dispute.

Not shown in the movie.

Aragorn discovers Hobbit footprints and the brooch of an elven-cloak.

Aragorn discovers an elven-brooch trampled by the Uruk-hai.

After a hard decision, the Three Hunters decide to sleep the second night of the chase so they won’t miss any other signs the hobbits may have left behind. They eat Lembas as they run.

Gimli states that they have not had food or rest for three days and nights.

Aragorn hears riders by listening to the ground. Legolas sees them clearly and describes them.

While tracking, Aragorn checks the ground and hears a thunderous sound. Aragorn listened to the ground while tracking them and guessed their scent has been detected. Later, Legolas sees the Uruks turning northeast towards Isengard.

As the Three Hunters sit and wait for the approaching horsemen, they are not seen until Aragorn stands and asks for news.

The Three hunters hide behind a hilltop rock until Aragorn seems sure it is the Rohirrim. He stands and asks for news.

The conversation between Éomer and Aragorn includes the name Strider, Lothlorien and the Golden Lady, questions of whom each other serves, Andúril, and Boromir.

The conversation is somewhat truncated, keeping only the necessary information.

Gimli vows to teach Éomer gentle speech for speaking badly of Galadriel.

Gimli’s banter draws Eomer’s ire and almost lands them into a fight.

Éomer speaks privately with Aragorn about Gandalf, Boromir, and their chase of the orcs. He names Aragorn Wingfoot.

Not shown in the movie.

Éomer places trust in Aragorn by lending him two horses of fallen Rohirrim on agreement to return them after their errand is done.

Éomer gives Aragorn two horses as payment for seemingly killing their friends.

They camp on the borders of Fangorn. Aragorn warns them about the perils of the forest. Gimli thinks he sees Saruman sneaking in the forest. Legolas discovers their horses are gone.

Gimli roots through the burning orc pile and finds one of their belts. Aragorn kicks a helmet in agony and frustration, then tracks the hobbits into Fangorn.

Chapter III: The Uruk-hai

Pippin remembers being attacked by the Uruk-hai. Merry cut off a few hands and arms before Boromir arrived to save them.

Merry and Pippin threw stones before and during Boromir’s rescue, as well as using their swords. Shown earlier in chronological order.

There are three groups of orcs: Saruman’s Uruk-hai, Mordor Orcs, and orcs from Moria.

The Uruk-hai meet a group of Moria orcs and Mordor orcs while traveling to Isengard.

The three groups argue about what to do about Merry and Pippin. The orders of Ugluk, the Uruk-hai leader, are to bring the Halflings back alive. The orders of Grishnakh, the Mordor orc leader, are to bring them back unspoiled. The Moria orcs want to kill them for revenge. Grishnakh questions Saruman’s authority over Sauron’s.

The Mordor orcs want the prisoners from the Uruk-hai. Ugluk refuses to take orders from lesser orcs. The prisoners will go to Isengard.

Ugluk’s orders are to bring them back alive an unspoiled, which causes an argument.

The Uruk-hai kill several Moria orcs during an argument. Pippin uses the chance to cut his bonds using the knife of a slain orc, but then reties them for appearances.

The groups argue over whether to eat the prisoners. Ugluk’s orders are to bring them back alive an unspoiled. Pippin cuts his bonds during the attack by the Rohirrim.

Merry and Pippin are made to run on their own legs part of the time.

Merry and Pippin appeared to be carried the whole time.

While running on their own, they are given some orc liquor to help them run, and Merry is given some orc medicine for his cut.

Pippin begs for water to be given to Merry because he’s sick. They force some orc liquor down his throat.

Pippin darts out of the line and tumbles to the grass, using his hands to loosen his elven cloak brooch and drop it on the ground.

When Pippin hears they smell man flesh, he uses his mouth to rip off his elven cloak brooch and spit it on the ground. It is trampled by some orcs. They are still being carried by orcs.

The orcs give Merry and Pippin some stale bread and raw, dried meat.

An orc complains of having only maggoty bread to eat. They want to eat the hobbits.

The orcs stop and talk about the whiteskins approaching them. This inspires the orcs to run faster.

Not in the movie.

The horsemen kill many orcs while still moving, then encircle the orcs during the night.

The horsemen suddenly attack out of nowhere with no warning during the night.

Merry and Pippin talk about eating Lembas.

Merry thinks they have made a mistake in leaving the Shire. They hear the trees talking and Merry tells Pippin about the Old Forest.

While Ugluk stops the others from running off, Grishnakh searches the hobbits.

While crawling away from the cannibalistic orc fight, Grishnakh catches Pippin.

Grishnakh raises his sword to kill the hobbits and an arrow pierces his hand. He stands and is ridden down and impaled by a spear.

Grishnakh tells Pippin to call for help just before a spear impales him.

The other orcs realize the hobbits are missing as the horsemen close in the circle. The hobbits are outside of the circle.

As the horsemen attack, Merry and Pippin escape the battle and dodge the horses. Grishnakh follows them and grabs Merry’s belt. Merry loosens the belt to escape.

The hobbits eat Lembas, then use Grishnakh’s knife to cut their bonds. They crawl first, then walk away.

Pippin uses a dead orc’s sword to cut his bonds, then the hobbits run away, dodging the battle

They look back on the battle and talk about their plans.

Not shown in the movie. They immediately meet Treebeard.

Chapter IV: Treebeard

Merry and Pippin escaped to the forest uninhibited.

A single orc follows them into the forest wanting to kill them.

The hobbits eat Lembas, drink stream water, and explore around. Treebeard hears them and likes their voices. If he had seen them before he heard them, he would have trodden on them, mistaking them for orcs.

The hobbits climb a tree to escape from the orc. Pippin discovers he has climbed up Treebeard, who thinks they are orcs. The hobbits are unable to convince Treebeard otherwise.

As they talk, Treebeard runs through his list of creatures. They exchange information and get to know each other.

Not in the movie.

Merry asks Treebeard of Gandalf and which side he’s on. Treebeard doesn’t understand what he means by “side.”

Pippin asks Treebeard which side he’s on while still being thought of as an orc. Treebeard is on nobody’s side.

Treebeard takes the hobbits to his home while they converse further about the quest, current events, and the nature of Ents.

Treebeard takes the hobbits to his home at Gandalf’s request to keep them safe. Treebeard tells more of Ents to the hobbits enroute.

Treebeard’s home has gate-posts, a rock wall, a table, a bed, and a stream.

Treebeard’s home appears to be just a clearing in the forest with a stream.

Treebeard gives the hobbits some ent draught, then listens to their tale. He asks them if they have seen the Entwives.

The hobbits drink the ent draught in the morning, and fight over the drink. A tree engulfs them until Treebeard rescues them. The conversation about the Entwives happened earlier while on the way.

Treebeard laments that nobody is on his side or cares for the woods. He stays out of the affairs of wizards and great wars.

Treebeard said this immediately after picking up the hobbits.

Treebeard tells the hobbits about his neighbor, Saruman, and how he doesn’t care for growing things.

Pippin notices smoke rising from Isengard. Treebeard says that is always the case lately.

Treebeard suspects Saruman of altering orcs, and blames him for the sudden increase in the orc population as well as for the cutting of the trees.

Not in the movie.

Treebeard has known many of these trees from nut and acorn. He vows to stop Saruman.

Treebeard sees the destruction of the trees after the Entmmot and says he has known many of them from nut and acorn. He howls and an army of Ents emerge to stop Saruman.

Treebeard counts the number of Ents and remarks how few there are left. He tells the hobbits how they lost the Entwives.

Treebeard tells the hobbits how the forest has grown wild and will harm other creatures because there are too few Ents to tend the forest. He tells the hobbits that the Entwives are lost.

The next morning, Treebeard tells the hobbits they are going to Entmoot. Pippin asks where it is.

While arriving at Entmoot, Treebeard tells them they are going to Entmoot. Merry asks what it is.

After deciding the hobbits are not orcs, Treebeard invites them to go walk around and drink from the stream.

After deciding the hobbits are not orcs, Merry pressures them for a decision on whether to stop Saruman. The hobbits stay at Entmoot.

The hobbits wonder and talk about Isengard; Treebeard and Quickbeam meet them. Quickbeam keeps them company for another day and a half.

Not shown in the movie. Entmoot appears to take place all within one day.

The Ents emerge from Entmoot marching and singing. They are roused and going to war with Saruman.

The Ents decide to not get involved. Merry reminds them they are part of this world, but to no avail.

Treebeard comments that they are likely going to their doom, the last march of the Ents.

Treebeard says this after calling the other Ents to attack after he’s seen the damage done to the forest by Saruman’s orcs.

Pippin sees trees moving with the Ents.

The hobbits see this after Treebeard’s howl.

Chapter V: The White Rider

After sunrise, the Three Hunters find signs of the hobbits: Mallorn leaf, Lembas crumbs, and a cut rope.

Aragorn reads the signs and discovers the riddle of the hobbits’ escape: footprints, cut rope, and other signs in the dust.

Aragorn seems to know more about Ents than Legolas. It is because of Celeborn’s warning that he is wary.

They hear the trees speaking to each other. Aragorn tells Gimli to lower his axe. Legolas tells Gimli the trees have feelings and can talk.

After seeing an old, hooded man, they get their weapons ready. They put the weapons away after a command from the old man.

After sensing an old man they guess to be Saruman, they get their weapons ready.

They talk with the mysterious man for a bit about their current pursuit. As the old man turns away, the spell is broken and they again raise their weapons.

As they prepare for the worst, their plan is to attack first, ask questions later.

The old man’s cloak is drawn apart, they see white cloth, and assume it is Saruman. As they attack, Gimli’s axe falls from his hands, Aragorn’s sword blazes, and Legolas shoots high in the air.

As they turn, a bright white light shines, covering the man’s face. Gimli’s axe is deflected by the man’s staff, as is Legolas’s arrow, while Aragorn’s sword blazes.

Legolas finally recognizes the stranger and exclaims, “Mithrandir!”

The old man tells them of their current quest in a voice that sounds like Saruman.

They sit and talk with Gandalf about what has happened to the Fellowship since his fall, answering many riddles and questions.

Gandalf reveals himself at Aragorn’s command. Legolas asks for forgiveness because he mistook him for Saruman. Some of this conversation happens later while camping enroute to Edoras.

Gandalf talks of the winged Nazgul, Ents, Saruman, Mordor, and the quest with the Three Hunters. He then reluctantly talks of his fall and return, a visit to Lorien, and gives them messages from Galadriel.

He tells them of his fall and return. After Gimli complains they ran all this way for nothing, Gandalf hints about the Ents. Gimli grumbles about Fangorn but quickly changes his tone when he remembers he could be in danger. Gimli then complains about how the new Gandalf is grumpier.

They are stopped at the gates of the city by guards, speaking only the Rohan language.

They ride through the gates and on to the city uninhibited.

One guard says the horses they ride are of the Mearas unless his eyes are cheated by some spell.

Legolas says this of Shadowfax when Gandalf first calls him.

The king grants permission to allow the remainder of the Fellowship passage. They return Hasufel, Arod, and Shadowfax.

The remainder of the Fellowship ride silently through Edoras. Aragorn sees Éowyn briefly. Gimli remarks about the cheerfulness of Edoras.

Legolas charges Hama to keep his bow safe, as it was a gift from Galadriel. Aragorn refuses to give up Andúril. Gandalf quiets the quarrel and gives up Glamdring. Aragorn finally submits, as long as nobody touches Andúril. Gimli also gives up his axe.

The significance of their weapons is not mentioned. Aragorn gives up his sword willingly since it is nothing special. Gandalf isn’t shown having a sword.

Gandalf refuses to give up his staff, calling it a walking stick, and chooses to sit outside until Théoden hobbles out. Aragorn comments on the irony. Hama trusts Gandalf.

Gandalf refuses to give up his staff, calling it a walking stick. Hama reluctantly allows it, and Gandalf enters using Legolas’s arm as support as well.

They enter the hall and approach Théoden. He stands and greets them, but calls Gandalf a herald of woe.

They enter the hall, Gandalf comments on the courtesy of the hall. As they approach Théoden, Wormtongue tells the king Gandalf is a herald of woe and not welcome.

Gandalf tells Théoden to breathe the free air. Théoden stands on his own.

Gandalf guesses Éomer is being held prisoner for disobeying the king and threatening Wormtongue. Théoden calls for Éomer.

Éomer was banished earlier by Wormtongue for threatening him. He takes a company of horses and men loyal to him.

Gandalf whispers to Théoden about the current events, saying they need only hold out a little longer before all would be well.

Gandalf uses the attacks on Rohan as motivation to get Théoden to fight back.
