The Movie

Chapter I: Many Meetings

Gandalf and Frodo talk. Gandalf tells Frodo he was imprisoned, and that there are many powers in this world he has not been tested against.

Gandalf and Frodo Talk. Gandalf has a flashback of his rescue by Gwaihir. Part of the story between Saruman and Gandalf was shown earlier. The bit about many powers in the world happens outside of Moria.

The conversation is quite long. Gandalf explains about men, Rangers, Ring Wraiths, Frodo’s wound, and the flood being caused by Elrond and Gandalf. Frodo falls back asleep to rest.

Not in the Movie

Frodo wakes up, gets up, and looks in the mirror. Sam enters and takes Frodo’s hand.

Sam takes Frodo to meet Merry and Pippin. Elrond has a feast, attended by Arwen, Gloin, and others. Afterwards they retire to the Hall of Fire where Frodo finds Bilbo, who is writing a song.

Sam takes Frodo to meet Merry and Pippin. Sitting on a nearby bench is Bilbo. Frodo reads Bilbo’s book.

Bilbo tells of his recent wanderings to Dale.

Bilbo says he meant to see places from his adventure, but age caught up to him and was unable to go.

Bilbo asks to see the ring. To Frodo, it appears Bilbo resembles Gollum. Bilbo asks Frodo to put the ring away.

Occurred just before the Fellowship left Rivendell. Bilbo lunges for the ring.

Strider/Aragorn/Dûnadan helps Bilbo finish his song. Bilbo presents it to the group.

Not in the Movie.

Not in the book.

Elrond and Gandalf talk about Frodo’s resilience. Gandalf tells of Saruman’s Uruk-hai breeding and treason. Elrond recalls how Isildur was unwilling to destroy the Ring and how men are weak. He says the blood of Numenor is all but spent, its pride and dignity forgotten. Men, elves, and dwarves arrive at Rivendell. Gandalf reminds Elrond of Aragorn’s heritage. Elrond says he turned from that path.

Not in the book.

Boromir finds the Narsil museum and meets Aragorn. He holds the hilt of Narsil and drops it. Aragorn replaces it and Arwen approaches him. She tells him that he is Isildur’s heir, not Isildur himself. Aragorn is concerned about his weakness towards the Ring that he inherited.

The story of Aragorn and Arwen is told in the appendix, and most events happened long before.

Aragorn and Arwen have a love moment near a waterfall. Arwen professes her love and chooses to live a mortal life.

Chapter II: The Council of Elrond

Frodo wakes up and is summoned to the Council by a bell. The council is attended by Gloin, Gimli, Glorfindel, Aragorn, Erestor, Galdor, Legolas, Gandalf, Boromir, Bilbo, and Elrond.

The council begins. It is attended by Gimli, Boromir, Legolas, Elrond, Gandalf, Bilbo, Aragorn, Gandalf, Elrond, and other unnamed elves, dwarves and men.

Gloin tells of Sauron’s offer to the dwarves in return for Bilbo. Elrond recalls the tale of the making of the Great Rings of Power, the glory and fall of Numenor, the history of the Ring, the first War of the Ring, and some history of Gondor.

Not in the movie.

Boromir defends Gondor to the council, and claims that by its valor is Mordor kept at bay. He says that in Gondor the blood of Numenor is not all spent or its pride and dignity forgotten, but Sauron’s forces are advancing against Gondor. He comes seeking the answer to a riddle shown to him in a dream.

Boromir claims that by the blood of his people are these lands kept safe. He comes per his father’s request to attend Elrond’s council and bring back the ring. Elrond claims the blood of Númenor is spent, etc. to Gandalf before the council is held.

In answer to the riddle, Aragorn stands up and shows the shards of Narsil. Boromir questions Aragorn’s authority. Elrond tells of Aragorn’s heritage.

Boromir’s riddle is not in the movie. Legolas informs Boromir of Aragorn’s heritage when his authority is questioned.

Frodo is commanded to bring the Ring forth. Boromir still questions Aragorn. Bilbo recites his poem in Aragorn’s defense. Aragorn informs Boromir that the Rangers of the North have also been keeping the Enemy’s forces at bay but receive less praise.

Frodo is commanded to bring the Ring forth. Everyone stares at it for a moment. Boromir is glad, and wishes to use the Ring to help their cause. Aragorn tells him nobody can wield it. Boromir questions Aragorn’s authority. Bilbo’s poem is recited by Arwen before the sword is reforged.

Bilbo tells of how he found the Ring. Then Frodo tells his tale of getting the Ring to Rivendell. Gandalf gives the proofs and history of the Ring. He tells of Saruman’s treachery, of reading the scroll of Isildur describing the fiery letters of the Ring, and of the search for Gollum.

In an earlier cut scene, Gandalf is shown researching the scrolls of Gondor, finally finding Isildur’s scroll describing his experiences with the Ring and the fiery letters.

Gandalf recites the Ring lore in the black speech; shadow covers the sun, and his voice changes.

Gandalf suddenly recites the Ring poem in the Black speech to deter Boromir from touching the Ring.

Gandalf tells of putting Gollum in the care of the elves of Mirkwood. Legolas tells of Gollum’s escape at the hands of orcs.

Gandalf says he was unsuccessful at catching Gollum back in Bag End, after the Ring’s true nature was revealed by Frodo’s fire.

Gandalf recalls his meeting of Radagast. Radagast relays a message from Saruman summoning him to Isengard. He tells Radagast to send messages to Orthanc by the birds and beasts, who are Radagast’s friends.

Not in the movie. Gandalf elects to talk to Saruman after learning the true nature of the ring. While trapped, Gandalf instead talks to a moth to fetch Gwaihir.

Gandalf tells of his letter entrusted to Butterbur. He hurries to Orthanc. Saruman offers Gandalf a place in the new order by joining him and controlling the Ruling Ring.

The part about the letter was not in the movie. However, in a cut scene, Gandalf was offered to join Saruman. Saruman tells Gandalf it would be wise to join with the side which will eventually win.

Gandalf refuses and is imprisoned on top of Orthanc. Gwaihir comes bearing messages and rescues Gandalf. Gandalf borrows Shadowfax from the King of Rohan. Gandalf rushes to the Shire and follows Frodo’s path. He contends with some of the Nine on Weathertop, and then finally comes to Rivendell.

After unsuccessfully trying to escape, Gandalf fights Saruman but loses, and is imprisoned on top of Orthanc.

Gandalf’s rescue is shown as a flashback earlier. Gandalf sent a moth to fetch Gwaihir.

The council discusses whether Tom Bombadil could defend the Ring. They decide that taking it across the sea or hiding it would only delay the Enemy. Their only option is to destroy the Ring.

Not in the movie. When it’s decided that the Ring must be destroyed, Gimli attempts to do so with his axe unsuccessfully.

Boromir offers to use the Ring against Sauron. The council rejects the idea. Boromir is disappointed, and asks for help in the form of Narsil.

Boromir says the Ring is a gift. Aragorn tells him nobody can wield it. Boromir is suspicious of a Ranger’s advice. Legolas informs Boromir of Aragorn’s heritage.

Bilbo offers to take the Ring since he brought the Ring out of Gollum’s cave. In the silence of deciding who should take the Ring, Frodo offers. Sam jumps out of his corner and refuses to be left behind.

During the argument, Frodo offers to take the Ring. Sam jumps out from behind some bushes and refuses to be left behind. Merry and Pippin follow suit. Bilbo is absent.

Chapter III: The Ring Goes South

Later in Bilbo’s room, Gandalf offers to come along with Frodo and Sam. Scouts are sent out from Rivendell.

Not in the movie.

Two months later, the scouts return. Elrond chooses the nine of the Fellowship to counter the Nine ring wraiths. He chooses one each to represent the free peoples of the World. Legolas for the Elves, Gimli for the Dwarves, Aragorn for men. Boromir is also chosen since the way back to Minas Tirith lies with the path of the Fellowship. Gandalf convinces Elrond to let Merry and Pippin fill the two vacant spots for the sake of friendship.

Gandalf volunteers to help Frodo with his burden. Aragorn offers his sword, Legolas his bow, and Gimli his axe. Boromir offers to come along as well. Sam jumps out of the bushes and refuses to be left behind. Merry and Pippin also join the group.

Narsil is reforged by Elven smiths and is renamed Andúril, Flame of the West.

Before leaving, Aragorn visits his mother’s grave at Rivendell. Elrond defends her choice of raising Aragorn in Rivendell. He offers to reforge the sword of kings, but Aragorn refuses, saying he has never wanted that power or responsibility.

At the outset of the journey, Boromir blows his horn. They take Bill the pony for their baggage. Sam laments not taking rope.

Elrond gives the Fellowship their charge and bids them good luck. Gandalf has Frodo lead them out of Rivendell. Frodo asks if Mordor is right or left.

After many days, they rest in Hollin. Aragorn notices the lack of wildlife sounds. That night while the others are resting, Sam sees a cloud of crows. Aragorn tells Gandalf that was really a flock of crebain from Dunland.

While resting on a hill, Boromir teaches the hobbits some swordplay. Gimli offers to go through Moria. Gandalf is adamant about not going that way. Sam notices a strange cloud. Gimli says it’s just a wisp of cloud. Boromir notices it is moving fast and against the wind. Legolas identifies the species and origin of the birds

Days later, Frodo feels a shadow pass over the Fellowship. He says it may only be a thin wisp of clouds. Aragorn notes that it was moving fast and not with the wind.

Not in the movie. Combined with the scene in Hollin.

Aragorn and Gandalf debate on which path to choose. They decide to go with Aragorn’s plan of taking the Pass of Caradhras.

Gandalf is forced to take the Pass of Caradhras since the Gap of Rohan is being watched by Saruman through the birds.

Not in the book.

Frodo falls and the Ring comes loose. Boromir picks it up and wonders about the grief and doubt it causes. Aragorn has his hand on his sword.

Boromir and Gimli venture a guess if the snow is caused by the Enemy. Gandalf somewhat confirms this guess.

In a cut scene, Saruman is shown making the storm to hinder the Fellowship.

Boromir hears fell voices in the air. Aragorn’s opinion is that it is the mountain opposing them.

Legolas hears fell voices in the air. Gandalf confirms that it is Saruman.

During a rest, Gandalf gives each of the Fellowship a mouthful of miruvor. They light a fire.

Not in the movie.

They decide to retreat from the mountain. Aragorn and Boromir must plough through the drifts while Legolas scouts ahead.

Saruman’s spells cause the Fellowship to be buried in snow. Aragorn says they must turn back.

The crebain return as they exit the mountain pass.

Not in the movie. However, we do see them return before the battle of Helm’s Deep.

Chapter IV: A Journey in the Dark

Once off the mountain, the Fellowship contemplates returning to Rivendell, going through Moria, or going to the Gap of Rohan.

After being buried in snow, Gandalf lets Frodo choose the path. Boromir lobbies for the Gap of Rohan, while Gimli wants to pass through Moria. Frodo chooses to go through Moria.

Gandalf wishes to go through Moria, while Aragorn has evil memories of it and is against going that way. However, he is willing to follow Gandalf as Gandalf followed him to Caradhras. They decide to make the decision in the morning.

Gandalf avoids Moria unless there was no other way. He is clearly concerned about Durin’s Bane, the Balrog.

During the night, they are surrounded by wargs. Gandalf, Aragorn, Gimli, and Boromir fight them off. The trees around them are lit on fire by Gandalf. They find no bodies in the morning.

Not in the movie. However, a similar scene occurred before the Battle of Helm’s Deep, though the wargs leave bodies.

Sam says the battle was a real eye opener.

Sam says this about Dwarrowdelf later.

Boromir throws a stone into the lake. Frodo begs him to stop.

Merry and Pippin throw stones into the water. Aragorn warns them to stop.

Gandalf correctly translates the doors instructions correctly and says, “Mellon.” He says Merry was on the right track.

Frodo deciphers the riddle.

Gandalf’s staff naturally emits a glow to provide some light with which to guide the Fellowship.

Gandalf inserts a clear rock in the top of his staff and makes it glow.

While waiting for Gandalf to decide which of the three passages to take, Pippin purposefully throws a stone into a well. They hear a hammer tap.

Pippin knocks a skeleton and bucket down a well in the Chamber of Mazarbul while touching it. They hear drums and orcs coming.

Frodo thinks he hears feet pattering and sees two eyes. He is unsure of what they are.

Frodo clearly sees something while resting before the three doors. Gandalf confirms that Gollum has been following for three days, and tells more about Gollum’s life.

Chapter V: The Bridge of Khazad-Dûm

Gandalf reads quite a bit of the book they find.

Gandalf reads just the last few sentences of the book they find.

Drums start with no provocation.

Drums start because Pippin knocks a skeleton down a well.

Gandalf peeks his head out the door for a look and to spook the orcs by pretending to be Balin’s ghost. He sees a cave troll.

Boromir peeks his head out for a look. He sees a cave troll.

Sting and Glamdring glow blue as the orcs approach.

Only Sting glows blue as the orcs approach.

Boromir hacks at the cave troll’s arm. Frodo stabs its foot and the troll retreats.

During the battle with the orcs, a cave troll enters and fights the Fellowship.

An orc chieftain dodges the Fellowship and impales Frodo with a spear. Aragorn kills the orc. He attempts to carry Frodo, but Frodo is able to run himself.

Defending Frodo, Aragorn attacks the troll with a spear. The troll then uses the spear to impale Frodo. Frodo reveals his armor after the troll is dead.

Gandalf stays behind to cast a door-shutting spell while the Fellowship runs.

The entire Fellowship escape out of a large hole in the back wall. Orcs chase them and surround them, only to flee because of a Balrog.

They run for several miles in the dark. Gandalf tells of the enemy on the other side of the door that nearly defeated him.

They run down passages and stairs, encountering a break in the stairs and are forced to jump. “Nobody tosses a dwarf!”

The lower levels were set on fire as a trap for the Fellowship. However, because they went out the east door from the Chamber of Mazarbul, the fire lies between them and the orcs.

Orcs appear unable to reach the Fellowship. A fiery chasm separates them.

Trolls make bridges out of cement slabs and orcs pursue them, but back away when a Balrog appears.

Orcs surround the Fellowship after escaping the Chamber of Mazarbul. They flee when a Balrog appears.

Boromir blows his horn to delay the orcs.

Not in the movie.

Aragorn and Boromir stand behind Gandalf on the bridge.

Aragorn and Boromir hold back the hobbits.

As Gandalf smites the bridge, his staff breaks. The Balrog’s whip curls around Gandalf’s knees. Gandalf cries “Fly, you fools!” as he falls.

Gandalf’s staff remains intact as he smites the bridge. The Balrog’s whip curls around Gandalf’s ankles. Gandalf says “Fly, you fools!” just before his grip slips.

Aragorn assumes leadership of the Fellowship. After running through a large hall, they encounter a guard of orcs and fight through them.

Aragorn trails behind slightly. Orc arrows sail past them as they run out the nearby exit.

Chapter VI: Lothlorien

Aragorn warns the Fellowship they cannot linger. He gives a “told-you-so” to Gandalf posthumously.

Boromir asks for a moment to lament Gandalf’s death. Aragorn is quite stern that they must move on.

After passing Mirrormere, Gimli takes Frodo to Durin’s stone.

Mirrormere is seen briefly in the background as Aragorn gets a look at Lothlorien.

They travel for some miles next to the Silverlode river. They stop for a rest and to bandage wounds. Aragorn discovers Frodo’s mithril coat.

The distance between the Eastern gate of Moria and Lothlorien is shown briefly. The Fellowship discovered the mithril coat immediately after Frodo was stabbed.

Gimli declares orcs aren’t following them. Frodo thinks he hears feet and sees eyes again.

Not in the movie.

Boromir is reluctant to enter the woods because of rumors in Gondor. Aragorn tries to calm his fears.

Gimli warns the hobbits of the elf-witch in these woods. Frodo hears Galadriel telepathically tell him of the evil he brings.

They wade across the Nimrodel stream and have a meal. Legolas sings a song and tells of the lay of the land.

Not in the movie.

They take refuge in the trees, but meet elves. Legolas warns them not to move and talks to them in elvish. The Elves comment about how loud they all breathe. Sam covers his mouth.

As the Fellowship enters the woods, Elves surprise them with drawn bows; only Legolas is quick enough to draw a weapon. They comment about how loud Gimli breathes.

Legolas and Frodo are allowed up into a flet. They speak of the Fellowship, introductions, and of sleeping arrangements. Aragorn and Legolas must guard and answer for Gimli.

All of the Fellowship is allowed into a flet. After some introductions, Aragorn must argue and beg for help from Haldir, who wishes to go no further. Boromir gives words of hope to Frodo.

During the night, orcs follow their trail and pass the Fellowship. Haldir’s brothers lead the orcs into the woods and slay them. Frodo sees eyes again.

A scene with orcs following them was shot, but cut. Not in the movie.

Haldir helps them cross a stream by means of a temporary rope bridge. They attempt to blindfold Gimli, but he refuses. Aragorn settles the dispute by having everyone blindfolded.

Not in the movie.

They travel for two days blindfolded until message is received that the Lady and Lord permit them to walk freely.

They are shown traveling freely to Caras Galadhon, led by Haldir.

Chapter VII: The Mirror of Galadriel

They enter the city by the south gate and climb to the uppermost flet by means of stairs and ladders.

They are shown climbing stairs.

Frodo is asked to sit beside Celeborn.

Not in the movie.

Celeborn questions Gandalf’s whereabouts. Gandalf’s mind is hidden from Galadriel. Aragorn tells of his fall in Moria.

Celeborn questions Gandalf’s whereabouts because he cannot see Gandalf from afar. Before any can answer, Galadriel reads the minds of the Fellowship.

Celeborn describes the Fellowship’s quest as upon the edge of a knife. Galadriel holds their gazes with her eyes. Only Legolas and Aragorn sustain it.

Galadriel describes the Fellowship’s quest as upon the edge of a knife. Galadriel holds their gazes with her eyes. Boromir cannot endure and is clearly troubled. Sam doesn’t turn away.

Galadriel bids the Fellowship to rest and not let their hearts be troubled.

While Galadriel tells the Fellowship to rest, she telepathically welcomes Frodo and mentions his connection with the Eye of Sauron.

While resting, the members of the Fellowship speak of their experience of Galadriel’s gaze. Each, it seems, is given the chance to turn away from the quest.

Boromir talks to Aragorn of the experience with Galadriel. He reports that she says there is still hope, but he cannot see it.

Frodo repeats a poem made by Bilbo about Gandalf. Sam adds his own verse about his fireworks.

Sam supposes that the lamentation sung by the Elves for Gandalf doesn’t include anything about fireworks, and adds his own verse while Gimli snores and Aragorn sharpens his sword.

They spend many days there; Legolas is off with other elves much of the time, and does not sleep with the rest of the Fellowship.

Boromir, unable to rest, speaks to Aragorn of his experience with Galadriel, Gondor, the tower of Ecthelion, and his commitment to his father.

As Sam is talking about wanting to see some magic, Galadriel bids them follow her into a dell.

Galadriel walks past Frodo, waking him. She bids him follow her into a dell.

Galadriel warns them to not touch the mirror. Sam looks into the mirror and sees a dark, grim version of the Shire, making him want to return. Frodo looks and sees visions of Gandalf, Bilbo, ships from the West, Minas Tirith, and Sauron’s Eye.

Frodo looks into the mirror and sees a dark, grim version of the Shire, the Fellowship turning away from him, and Sauron’s Eye.

Galadriel speaks of her ring, the fate of all the rings if the One Ring is destroyed, and her wishes.

Galadriel speaks only of her ring.

Frodo asks why he cannot read minds when he has the ring. She replies it is because he has not the power or the will. Sam doesn’t notice her ring until she points it out.

Galadriel hints that Boromir will try to take the Ring. Frodo’s mind is made up about what he is to do, though he’s afraid to do it alone. Galadriel says to bear a ring is to be alone.

Chapter VII: Farewell to Lorien

The Fellowship all resolve to continue on. However, their course is not decided. Celeborn furnishes them with boats.

Not in the movie.

While the Fellowship debates and decides a course, Boromir chooses to head towards Minas Tirith, then makes comments about the folly of destroying the Ring.

They find their boats packed with Lembas. Legolas explains what it is. Merry asks Pippin how many he ate. Pippin replies, “Four,” and then releases some bodily gas.

The Fellowship is led by Haldir to the docks. Sam finds elvish rope in the boats and keeps some for himself.

As the Fellowship near the water, Celeborn warns Aragorn of the orcs tracking them and gives Aragorn a knife.

They have a meal with Galadriel and Celeborn.

To Legolas, a bow of the Galadhrim and a quiver. To Sam, a box of Lothlorien earth and a Mallorn-tree seed. She asks Gimli what he desires. He wants only a strand of her hair. She gives him three. Finally to Frodo, a phial containing the light of Earendil.

Finally to Frodo, a phial containing the light of Earendil.

As they travel down the Silverlode to the Anduin, Galaldriel and Celeborn bid them farewell, and Galadriel sings.

They see Galadriel wave them farewell as Gimli and Frodo reflect on their gifts.

Legolas tells Aragorn they must cross the river now, and that a shadow and a threat has been growing on his mind. Aragorn says they will wait for cover of darkness before crossing.

They are still undecided on their path. Aragorn lets the Ring-bearer decide. Frodo asks for some time to make up his mind.

Aragorn informs them they will cross the river and approach Mordor from the north. Gimli tells of the hardships of that path. The Ring-bearer deciding the path was after being covered in snow earlier.

Frodo wanders up Amon Hen to think.

Frodo wanders off without anyone noticing. Aragorn notices that Boromir is also missing. They apparently set out to look for Frodo and Boromir.

Boromir follows Frodo.

While collecting firewood, Boromir approaches Frodo.

Frodo knows what he should do, but is afraid to do it.

This conversation took place between Frodo and Galadriel after looking in the mirror.

Boromir and Frodo discuss the ring. He tries to persuade Frodo not to destroy it.

Some of the conversation was moved to the trek up Caradhras and other places.

Frodo keeps a stone between them as protection. He slips the Ring on and runs away.

Boromir tackles Frodo in an attempt to take the Ring. Frodo puts the Ring on, surprising Boromir, then kicks him and runs.

While on Amon Hen, Frodo sees many things in all directions, including trolls, burning houses, and ships. Then he sees the Eye of Sauron and takes the Ring off.

Frodo sees a vision of the Eye of Sauron and Barad-dur. He takes the Ring off and falls backwards.

While the others wait for Frodo and discuss their path, Sam guesses Frodo might go alone.

Frodo hears Gandalf’s advice in his mind on the shore. It is the final resolve he needs to go alone.

Boromir returns to the group. He tells them Frodo used the Ring. They all panic and run after Frodo looking for him. Boromir is told to look after Merry and Pippin. Aragorn and Sam go together, as do Legolas and Gimli.
